Making ready one of Gary Gianni’s illustrations for ‘The Case of Death and Honey’ by Neil Gaiman. This process adds one or more sheets of paper to heavier parts of the image. This increases the printing pressure on those areas so that the solids are solid without over-inking the lighter areas.

1) Two small holes are made through a printed sheet into the cylinder packing.
2) A piece of carbon paper is placed under the printed sheet and the areas that need more pressure are drawn round with a pencil so that the carbon paper marks the back of the sheet. A sheet of paper, in this case newsprint, is stack to the back using removable adhesive.
3) A sharp scalpel is used to cut round the marked areas and the newsprint is removed from the lighter parts of the image.
4) The sheet is stuck to the cylinder packing using the holes made at the start of the process to make sure that it’s accurately positioned.

Arete Editions are well into the product…

Arete Editions are well into the production of “Frozen Hell”, the extended version of John W. Campbell Jr.’s “Who Goes There?” which was made into the movie “The Thing” by John Carpenter. The newly found novel length manuscript was discovered in 2019. Greg Manchess is the artist. He has created a lavish, richly illustrated interpretation of the story. He loves the snowy Antarctic landscapes and the scientists’ growing realisation that the shape shifting creature from another world is alive. The story will be illuminated by sixteen oil paintings, from single page to four-page foldouts, and loads of black and white illustrations and decorations. This will be printed at @Hand and Eye.
