Happy New Year one and all! As the old year passes and the new one begins, we at Arete would like to wish you all a happy and prosperous new year!

Amidst all the world’s eruptions, stock shortages, supply issues and increased costs we have been making our plans for 2023. Last year we were mainly concentrating on getting Rich’s Lyra’s Books out on time; 2023 will be Arete’s turn.

We’ve been waiting for paper. Paper for the covers of Words of Fire has been on order from Germany for four months now – usually it takes a few days. This has delayed everything. We are also awaiting a new text paper for Frozen Hell.

Meanwhile Phil and Robert at Hand & Eye have made up the Monotype for Frozen Hell into pages, and it is looking glorious. Greg Manchess has sent us all the art for the book and it’s gobsmacking.

Here are a few of Rich and Greg’s ideas for the cover, the bradel bound cover of the solander box; and the cover of the Artist’s edition book showing the moulded leather work.

Also below are a couple of Greg’s black and white relief print images.

In March, or thereabouts, we’ll be doing a pre-sale of Frozen Hell.

The Artist’s Edition will include fold-out plates that are nearly a metre wide, virtually the size of Greg’s originals! Have a look at the size of his original!

During the summer we’ll also be announcing a new book, secret for now, it could be one of two books we have planned. A 25th anniversary book or one of our pre-teased books we have mentioned. Whichever comes ready in time.

During 2022 we’ve been working with the artist Allen Jones on his prints for Brave New World. His experience in the world of print making is second to none. For this publication he’s working with printer/artist Leslie Gerry https://lesliegerryeditions.com/ Both Leslie and Allen hope to take the techniques of digital art prints pioneered by David Hockney a step further. Allen has planned a whole section of prints with die cut shapes that reveal the oncoming image, we’re still working out how to make these amazing ideas work!

In the last quarter of the year we’ll be holding the pre-sale of Brave New World. We’ll be putting images up as they become finished.
