This is something you don’t see very often, an artist’s sketch book. After the initial backwards and forwarding that Gary Gianni and I go through to understand how we are going to approach the story of Neil’s The Case of Death and Honey, Gary creates a sketch book with all the text broken down, and, as much as possible, what text is going to be on the page. He then draws the ideas on to that page of text. It also enables us to see the rhythm of the images. It’s pretty long but I thought some may be interested. A few of you have asked whether Gary would sell any of his sketches we have shown, this is the reason for his indecision, he really doesn’t want to break up the book. I do think objects like this, never seen but hugely important, to the process of making a book are a secret history that should be seen and shown. Hope you can spend the time to look!

Checklists like are invaluable for complicated projects like printing a book. This one was for the Numbered and Fine editions of ‘The Case of Death and Honey’ by Neil Gaiman. It helps us to know what still has to be printed and to make sure that we don’t print a set of pages twice by accident.
For the last few months I have been working with Rich to make his first ‘Classic’ book, designing with him and Greg Manchess to create an absolute belter of a book! Lyra’s have just started teasing the designs, check these out! Phil has also just started to print the colophon pages and we are all really proud of the work. Well done Rich, they are going to be classic in every sense. 😍
This is what is happening now, paper going through the Heidelberg cylinder press by Phil Abel and Robert Hetherington, like some great steampunk machine
Close up of our FAG proofing press. We used it to print the Artist’s Edition of ‘The Case of Death and Honey’ by Neil Gaiman, an Arete Editions project.
