Some photos of the Lettered/Artists edition, this book is unique, the art shown on the cover is just one of the originals that Gary Gianni did for ‘The Case of Death and Honey’ so each book is different depending on what the original is, we’ll be putting out the full specs and price in a few days. And showing the secrets of the Solander box that the book fits into…
Each lettered edition of ‘The Case of Death and Honey’ by Neil Gaiman has a very intricate production; the box itself has a bradel bound cover, which I’ll show later this week. The book is oversized, 200 x 325 mm / 7.9in x 12.8in, larger than the numbered edition; it is bradel bound in red and off-white goatskin that has a cutout frame to the front board revealing the original artwork. Here you can see some of the work that Richard Tong @ Ludlow Bookbinders has to do, from the cutting out of the frame, to the gluing of the leather, each book requires a stunning amount of detail and time. The frame is filled with removable cloth and suedel covered ‘plug’ to protect the art, there are 7 passes of foil blocking done, of the bees to the front board frame and ‘plug’.
Gary Gianni illustrations for ‘The Case of Death and Honey’ by Neil Gaiman, with nearly forty full page images, after the death of Mycroft and the challenge he gives Sherlock Holmes, Holmes travels the world to find a very particular bee. Old Gao may have the secret to the rare species of black bee…

I like detailed specs on books, I know that some people in the trade like to keep them short and pithy but I like everything, so for the bibliophiles:

The front and back boards have been foil blocked extensively with 6 passes to the front, two to the back and two to the spine. Ten in total. Another of Gary Gianni’s, always surprising, images for Neil Gaiman’s The Case of Death and Honey, forty full page illustrations and one painting illuminate Neil’s tale of magic realism. There are so many great iconic images to choose from, but, for now, I’ll stick with Mycroft and Sherlock.
‘I had imagined that his illness might have wasted him away, but he seemed huger than ever, his fingers swollen into white suet sausages.
I said, ‘‘Good evening Mycroft. Doctor Hopkins tells me you have two weeks to live, and stated that I was under no circumstances to inform you of this.’’’
Here is another little film of Richard Tong from Ludlow Bookbinders. The top edge of each numbered edition of The Case of Death and Honey has been hand gilded, which you can see here, with the bottom edge deckled. I’m always absolutely astonished how much craft and care goes into each book. Filming by Richard Suckling Music by Christopher Caliendo Edit by Rick Waller
